'Moving Up a Year Group': KS1/KS2 Year 1 - 5 Transition Lesson Pack
This is a Lesson Pack designed to support with transition from one year to another, in particular Year 2 to Year 3. It has been designed to support all children in all year groups. For our Year 6/Primary 7 specific Lesson Pack, click here.
This session explores the different feelings linked to moving year groups, the similarities/differences linked to moving year group and several coping strategies for supporting with this transition.
How could this resource be used?
- To support with moving year groups.
- To support children to identify the similarities and differences linked to moving year groups.
- To encourage children to identify when they need further support for their mental health, both spotting warning signs in themselves and others.

KS1:
- H11. about different feelings that humans can experience.

- H27. about preparing to move to a new class/year group
KS2:
- H17. to recognise that feelings can change over time and range in intensity.
- H18. about everyday things that affect feelings and the importance of expressing feelings.
- H19. a varied vocabulary to use when talking about feelings; about how to express feelings in different ways.
- H20. strategies to respond to feelings, including intense or conflicting feelings; how to manage and respond to feelings appropriately and proportionately in different situations.
- H21. to recognise warning signs about mental health and wellbeing and how to seek support for themselves and others.
- H22. to recognise that anyone can experience mental ill health; that most difficulties can be resolved with help and support; and that it is important to discuss feelings with a trusted adult.
- H35. about the new opportunities and responsibilities that increasing independence may bring.
- H36. strategies to manage transitions between classes and key stages.
